Choosing the right pairs of shoes to take on holiday to make sure that you’re covered for all scenarios is always a tricky one to master. Even harder, if you have narrowed down your options, we all know how hard it can be trying to squeeze too many pairs of shoes into the corners of a tiny suitcase. No fear, Slinks has the answer. Our devilishly clever sandal designs allow you to choose from a selection of bases and match your chosen base with as many uppers as you like! A great way of saving you space and hassle.

Here at Slinks we’ve taken a hypothetical beach and sightseeing holiday to Santorini with your girlfriends to demonstrate how to wear only one pair of shoes in 7 different scenarios. We’ve taken the white Slinks base and teamed it with 7 different uppers to get you through your holiday.

For a simple option to wear to the beach we suggest the Miss T Slinks Upper in coral. This upper features a leather T-bar style which is guaranteed to go with everything and can be easily slipped on and off when you reach the sand.

2. Sightseeing
For an option that is going to look great in all your sightseeing photographs we have chosen the Lady Ellen Slinks Upper. This upper turns your base into an ultra glamorous gladiator that will take you through the day and into the night. The bottom strap threads through the loops of your Slinks base and the top strap around your ankle for a secure fit. The soft leather makes this upper extremely comfortable to wear and will provide all-day comfort while you explore your holiday destination.

3. To Dinner
For an evening of fine food and wine we suggest wearing none other than the Adeline Dew Slinks Upper. The highly embellished design of the strap will catch the light and show off your newly tanned skin. This upper is guaranteed to suit any foot!

4. On a night out
For a night out there is no better choice than the Lily Slinks Upper. The hand beaded swirl and spiral design will some sparkle to your outfit. This upper also looks stunning on any foot shape.

5. For a trip to the shops
We all know that a shopping trip requires comfortable footwear in order to be enjoyed. For this scenario we suggest choosing the Helena Slinks Upper which is a simple design that is guaranteed to provide long lasting comfort. This upper will also create a gorgeous two tone look with your white base that looks best teamed with a maxi dress.

6. On a date
If you’re lucky enough to bag an impromptu date on your getaway then we suggest the Bella Slinks Upper. This upper is is a girls dream. The design is simple and stylish but the gold ring gives it an edge. This upper will look great with whichever outfit you choose and will have you looking fabulous for your date.

7. To the Airport
For airport chic we suggest pairing your base with the Cecilia Slinks Upper. This upper is an asymmetrical delight. The sleek design will add some style to the simplest of outfits. The upper comes in a red, green and snake print design as well as white so there are plenty of options to choose from.

Backpacking adventures have become an increasingly popular type of travel – the nature of which often requires us to pack our bags and set off on a trip as a solo traveller. Enjoying your trip is of course a priority but safety needs to be considered and even more so when you’re travelling as a woman on your own. Slinks talks to Brenna of This Battered Suitcase and Char of Taylor Hearts Travel for their top tips on staying safe and enjoying the experience when travelling as a woman on your own.

First of all, are there advantages to travelling on your own?

B: I believe that solo travel allows you to learn a lot about yourself as well as the countries you’re visiting. It allows you do whatever you want, when you want, and it opens you up a lot more to new experiences and meeting new people.

C: You can be a do-er. Don’t dream about that destination or next experience. Just book it, get excited and enjoy it. Don’t wait for a friend to be up for it, as you could be waiting your whole life. Just make a plan and then make it happen.

What are your top tips? How do you stay safe?

B: My top tips for solo female travel are not that different than the tips I’d give a man, nor are they that different from the tips I’d give to someone in big cities like London or New York. Stay aware of your surroundings, and trust your intuition. As each country varies so much, it’s important to do your research and find out about common tourist scams. Remember that most of the world is good, and that most people (99%) are kind and helpful. Don’t let the fear of not staying safe keep you from travelling on your own.

C: Being safe is a priority. This is true no matter what your travel style or whoever you’re with, but you need to particularly aware of your surroundings as a solo female traveller. That pretty beach shack may be a fun drinking spot in the beautiful sunshine, but in the late evening you can easily become vulnerable. You can still go – just make sure you have a safe option for getting home, such as a trusted taxi company.

Are there any places you would recommend for this type of travel?

B: I’d recommend Southeast Asia and South America. As they’re both popular with tourists and backpackers, you meet a lot of other travellers along the way. If you’re a bit nervous to travel through developing countries on your own, I recommend starting with Australia and New Zealand, or Western Europe. Again, both places are quite safe and easy to navigate as a solo traveller.

C: Don’t always follow the crowds. When you’re travelling alone you’ll often meet other travellers, which is great. However, don’t feel like you have to see and do whatever they’re doing for the sake of being with other people. Stay true to yourself and ensure you have the trip you’ve always wanted. If you want to see something that your new friends aren’t fussed about, go without them.

Likewise, are there any destinations you would avoid if you were travelling alone?

B: I think it’s always smart to do your research and know the country you’re visiting. I would obviously avoid countries that are currently undergoing unrest or conflict. However, a lot of countries around the world are actually quite safe for tourists.

Thank you to Brenna and Char for talking with us and sharing their travel tips! We’d love to hear about your adventures if you’ve travelled on your own and remember to share your pictures of Slinks all over the globe!

The  award winning writer and blogger Emily Luxton is on a mission to explore the world through deeper travel. A lover of hiking, sunsets, adventures, culture, & occasional luxury! She is the perfect Slinks wearer – see what she had to say…

“Packing light and travelling in style aren’t two things that go together easily, especially when it comes to shoes. Generally for trips to warmer climes, I’ll allow myself one pair of trainers or walking shoes and just one pair of sandals. Which makes it pretty hard to dress up.

So, when the lovely folks at the “devilishly clever” sandal company Slinks got in touch to tell me about their stylish solution to the shoe packing conundrum, I was all ears. The brand was founded Jane Rafter, a designer who’s passionate about quality and practical but equally beautiful design. She’s combined all of these qualities into Slinks, the interchangeable sandal.

Slinks 3

t’s so simple, I can’t believe I didn’t think of it! Slinks sandals are interchangeable, all you have to do is to choose a base and a selection of uppers, and you’ll have lots of lovely options for travel footwear in one. It’s like taking lots of sandals awSlinks poppersay with you, except that you only have to pack one pair! Bases even included a wedge option if you prefer heels to flats – or you could take one of each and still hardly take up any suitcase space.

I opted for a nice black base since that will go with everything, but all the shades are pretty neutral making them super versatile. Choosing the uppers was a lot trickier; there are quite a few options! In the end, I went for the Cecila, a plain leather strap which is perfect for day wear. The thick strap is comfy, creating the perfect sandals for a bit of light sightseeing or chilling out at the beach. Then, if I want to dress the sandals up when night falls, it’s simple. I can swap the Cecila strap for the glitzy Lily of the Incas uppers which are decorated with pretty beaded swirls – creating a whole new sandal. The uppers are held securely in place with two poppers, so it’s really easy to swap them over – but they’re definitely not going to go flying off my feet as I walk.

Slinks 2

My Slinks sandals also come with their own cute cotton bag, which is ideal for travel and means I can stow them safely in my suitcase. The soft leather is comfy and feels really luxurious – these are high quality sandals that really do solve the shoe packing nightmare. I love my Slinks and they make travelling light that little bit more stylish. Beautiful, comfy, AND practical – who knew it was possible!”

“NB – my sandals were a gift from Slinks, but all words and opinions are my own”

Summer is almost over but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time to fit in a last minute getaway to Europe or beyond. We’ve put together the 5 best places where you can book your flight, pack up and go to enjoy the last of the good weather.

Budapest is the forgotten gem of Europe – it’s cheap, full of history and pretty impressive to look at. You can take in the stunning views of the Danube River by climbing to the top of Castle Hill and visiting the Fisherman’s Bastion. This is where you’ll also find the best view down onto the Chain Bridge which, when lit up at night, makes for one of the best views in Europe. On the other side of the river you can visit the Parliament Buildings and don’t forget the numerous wine and food tours on offer. The budget hotels and hostels on offer combined with the unbelievably low cost flights make Budapest an irresistible option. If that didn’t convince you then these photos will! Catherine of Lux Life documented her recent trip to Budapest here.

Budapest would be a great place to wear your Slinks Summer Sandals

Barcelona is an obvious choice for anyone that wants to travel within Europe – offering the best of both worlds with a city and beach break combined. The most popular attractions include La Sagrada Família, La Rambla and Park Güell but the list goes on and on. Barcelona’s boundless culture and impressive architecture is best absorbed wandering around the side streets and stopping for food and drink in some of the world’s best restaurants and bars. The long stretch of sun drenched sand and limitless nightlife also makes Barcelona one of the best all-rounders. The cheap flights are an added bonus. Checkout Theri’s Wardrobe Barcelona diary for an insight into the city.

Croatia has seen more and more tourists flock to its shores to reap the benefits of its non-euro Kuna currency. Besides the beautiful scenery and hot climate, Croatia also offers some of the best nightlife around. The city of Hvar is the perfect option for those not wanting to choose between culture and nightlife. Day trips to surrounding secluded islands where you can cliff jump and soak up the scenery can be followed by partying at exclusive bars that have drawn even Prince Harry to the island. You can reach Hvar by getting a very affordable flight to Split on the mainland and a short ferry ride will then take you to the island. Visit before it becomes mainstream! Head to The Wanderlusters to see what they got up to in Hvar.

Croatia, Slinks summer sandal getaway!

Marrakech is probably the best value trip you could take with flights from London at around £120 and a stay for two in a traditional riad can average as low as £250 for a week. However, because of the extremely hot climate, you might prefer to wait until mid September/October to visit. Immerse yourself in the culture by exploring the souks in the Jemaa El Fna, touring the local mosques and the Majorelle Garden and trekking through the desert on camels. A flight to Marrakech is around 3.5 hours and last minute availability can easily be found in the many traditional riad hotels dotted around the city centre. On the Luce has a great blog post on surviving the souks in Marrakech that is definitely worth a read.

Idea for a summer sandal getaway with Slinks

San Francisco

If you are hoping to go further afar for a last minute holiday then the US is a good option with frequent flights from the UK to its major cities and hundreds of hotels on offer whatever your budget. Why not try something different on the west coast and head to San Francisco? Explore Fisherman’s Warf, the Aquarium of the Bay and the Presidio or take a cable car to soak up the city and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. With some of the best restaurants and nightclubs on the West Coast in San Francisco there really is something for everyone. Then, if you have enough time, you could turn your visit into a Californian road trip and take in the sights of Napa Valley before flying home from Los Angeles. See how Taylor Hearts Travel spent her time in the beautiful city of San Francisco.

Packing light minimises the hassle that travel involves and also means that you can avoid costly luggage fees that those pesky airlines try to sting you with. Packing for Europe could mean you’re bundling as much into a backpack as possible for an extended trip or building a capsule holiday wardrobe for a quick getaway. But wherever you’re going and whether you’re travelling by train, plane or foot to Europe or beyond, these handy tips on how to pack light will make sure your trip runs as smoothly as possible without compromising on style.

  1. Pack Tightly As Well As Lightly
Make sure that your clothes are packed densely into your case and that there are no holes or gaps. This YouTube video is great for mastering a folding technique that will allow you to pack coats, jumpers, shirts and jeans all into one small bundle. Also remember that underwear, accessories and smaller items can be stuffed into shoes and corners to maximise your space.
  2. Wear Your Heavy Items
This seems obvious but wearing your bulkiest items is a way of cheating the system. If it’s not packed, it doesn’t count! Wear your naughty extra pieces to the airport and then at least they are not compromising your efficiently packed luggage.
  3. You Never Need More Than 3 Of One Thing
3 of the same item allows for one to be wearing, one to be washing and one to be drying. When choosing your 3 items try to pack a variety to maximise your options. You don’t need 3 pairs of blue jeans! The limit of 3 items should also be applied to shoes – if you choose the right 3 pairs then all bases are covered. A pair of trainers, a casual option and a pair of sandals is all you need. Luckily for us, however, we can get away with a Slinks set counting for only 1 pair of shoes. A base and 2-3 uppers will add variety and provide stylish day-to-night options without compromising space.
  4. Wash Your Clothes
If you’re going on a longer trip then the key to how to pack light thing is remembering that everything can be washed and worn again. Pack as if you’re going for 1 week and simply make the time to wash your clothes.
  5. Layer Up
If you’re unsure about the weather forecast or you’re travelling to multiple destinations with different climates, layering is the key to packing lightly. Take plenty of short sleeve pieces and layer them under just a couple of heavier jumpers or jackets. The heavier items won’t get too dirty quickly if you’re wearing a layer underneath. At the moment we are loving the Uniqlo Ultra Light Down for a summer jacket that rolls up into no space at all. Remember that tops layered under dresses and dungarees can also look super stylish.
  6. Don’t think ‘what if?’
The worst-case scenario will most likely not happen and if it does, chances are there is a shop nearby selling the item that you require. You’re more likely to regret taking too much extra stuff than you are not taking it.
  7. Stick To A Small Colour Palette
This is key to building a stylish capsule wardrobe and will ensure you can mix and match everything that you pack. It may seem boring but stick to neutral colours and pack a selection of colourful accessories to brighten up your outfits. This means that each outfit will be unique even if you’re wearing the same key items. Silk scarves such as this one by Beckford Silk is the perfect accessory for creating a chic and stylish outfit.

Much love x

The lovely Megan from Mapping Megan has tried and tested Slinks – here is what she thought…

“It’s a tough decision every time you go to pack; choosing which pair of shoes to sacrifice and leave in the wardrobe behind. You need your pair of hiking boots, as bulky as they are, and a good pair of sneakers are a must, but then you also have to consider footwear for the beach, something you can wear to dress up and then something to also dress down, perhaps a set of flats, a set of sandals, and, if you’re planning on hitting up the clubs, maybe even a sneaky pair of high heels.

What you end up looking at laid out on the floor are 8 pairs of shoes for one trip. Good luck fitting them all into one bag!

But why should we have to go through the heart wrenching agony to choose?! The answer? You shouldn’t! And this, my dear female traveler, is why every single one of you needs a pair of Slinks. Your packing problems solved without sacrificing your desire to travel with multiple pairs of shoes…because one pair of sandals is never enough!

Slinks are ingenious interchangeable sandals by Jane Rafter. From just one base you have a variety of sandal style options, and while in place the “uppers” appear fixed, these can be changed quickly and easily…imagine new shoes every day!

It’s 3, 4 or 5 sets of sandals in one, giving you shoes for every occasion, and fabulous feet wherever you go. And because you’re only traveling with one base, you’ll have so much more room in your bag to move!

Has your mind been blown?! Their footwear collection has fashionable flip flops, pretty summer sandals, and fantastic flats for comfortable city walks. Perfect for city breaks, beach escapes or summer holidays, and ideal for a capsule sunny wardrobe or dressy occasions like a destination wedding, the brilliance of this concept lies in the ability for multiple different options of shoe, while taking up minimal space in your bag. Wear a beaded sandal one day, and a simple classic leather sandal the next.

Slinks are constantly bringing out new designs and colors so once you have your bases you can just keep adding to your collection. You can choose your base in either a flat or a wedge and add uppers as you please. All the uppers can be worn on both the flat and the wedge bases which is fantastic.

My choice of Slinks? I went with a set of white leather bases with a variation of three different uppers, which came all beautifully packed in a silk bag. The bag has proved to be a fantastic way to organize the uppers and keep everything together in the one place.

I went with three choices of uppers to start, though check in with me again in a month to see how large my collection has grown! The uppers I have now are “Cecilia”, “Lily of the Incas” and “Lady Ellen”; and each comes in a range of different color choices as well meaning you can change your look to suit your mood!

Surprisingly, the Lady Ellen uppers are incredibly comfortable and supportive if you’re planning on taking a walk – normally I would reserve the walking shoe recommendation for sneakers, though as you can see below, they made it through some pretty hilly hikes!

The even better part? It’s a quality shoe! Slinks represent luxury craftsmanship and design down to the last stitch, and every pair of sandals is absolutely beautiful, simplistic and unique.

But now you’re thinking *&^%$ – I leave on my holiday tomorrow, and you’re only just telling me about Slinks now?!

Yes, they ship all over the world, and yes, if you send them an email they’ll organize next day delivery if possible and sort it all out!”

Slinks - Best travel sandals-16

When you’re trying to pack light it’s always a struggle with what shoes to bring. It’s hard to only pick a pair or two that go with a week or two worth of outfits. On our 2 year round-the-world trip I only have 2 pairs of sandals in our bags. Over the past 21 months of traveling I have had to replace a bunch of sandals. Currently I only have a black pair and a tan pair. Neither pair are cute & dressy, they are practical & comfortable for long distance walking. In my pre-travel life I would have a cute sparkly pair, gold pair, hot pink ones, just about a fun pair for every outfit… lately my feet looked sad. All I needed was a pair of the best travel sandals out there…

Enter Slinks

Slinks - Best travel sandals-2

Interchangeable sandals, what a brilliant idea! Slinks reached out to me and offered to send me a pair of slinks and a few interchangeable upper bands to try out. I couldn’t say no once I saw how cute they were. About time the best travel sandals have been produced.

How Do Slinks Work?Slinks - Best travel sandals-12

You purchase a base sandal, either a flat sandal or a wedge. The base sandals come in black, tan, white, bronze, and silver. I picked out two flat sandals, a white & silver base. Then you match interchangeable upper bands that can be worn with any base sandal. Slinks is constantly adding new new designs and colors, so you can keep your sandals up to date by just purchasing new upper bands.

Slinks - Best travel sandals-14

Swapping the upper bands takes no more than a minute. Just snap off the old one and snap on the new one. Each upper comes with a cute slinks bag, so it will always have a home.

The Verdict

Slinks - Best travel sandals-26

We recently just took a trip to Langkawi, Malaysia and the only sandals I brought were Slinks. I wore them all day, every day. They were awesome, I was able to wear my sliver sparkly ones for our fancy dinner at The Andaman and make them more casual during they daytime. I could have easily explored Bangkok and walked 10 miles a day in Slinks.

I now have 2 pairs of sandals that convert into 6! Plus I can make that into many more with a few more uppers. Looking forward to adding more fashionable upper bands in the future. Slinks truly are the best travel sandals on the market.

Thank you Slinks for sending two pairs to try out, as always opinions are my own

Calling all Travel Boggers… We recently sent off a pair of Slinks to a lovely travel blogger Hannah – at Getting Stamped. She is part of the Hannah and Adam team – a Wisconsin couple who left the American Dream behind to travel the world. We sent our gorgeous sandals all the way to Chiang Mai for her to try… the feedback has been fabulous and we also spotted a photo of her wearing them!

(Shhh… Hannah is wearing the white bases and the Miss T in fuchsia)

So far the Slinks have taken her to a couple of countries and she wore her Slinks the entire week while in Langkawi and loves them –  Can’t get much better than that!

We are not sure who originally wrote this letter but it is just too lovely not to share. It can apply to all older people and we need to remember who taught us and guided us to where we are now.

Patience, understanding and love should be with us always.

“My dear girl, the day you see I’m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through. If when we talk, I repeat the same thing a thousand times, don’t interrupt to say: “You said the same thing a minute ago”… Just listen, please. Try to remember the times when you were little and I would read the same story night after night until you would fall asleep. When I don’t want to take a bath, don’t be mad and don’t embarrass me. Remember when I had to run after you making excuses and trying to get you to take a shower when you were just a girl? When you see how ignorant I am when it comes to new technology, give me the time to learn and don’t look at me that way… remember, honey, I patiently taught you how to do many things like eating appropriately, getting dressed, combing your hair and dealing with life’s issues every day… the day you see I’m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through. If I occasionally lose track of what we’re talking about, give me the time to remember, and if I can’t, don’t be nervous, impatient or arrogant. Just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to be with you. And when my old, tired legs don’t let me move as quickly as before, give me your hand the same way that I offered mine to you when you first walked. When those days come, don’t feel sad… just be with me, and understand me while I get to the end of my life with love. I’ll cherish and thank you for the gift of time and joy we shared. With a big smile and the huge love I’ve always had for you, I just want to say, I love you… my darling daughter. “

Excited does explain how we are feeling at the moment. New collection designed, new fabrics, leather, swarovski crystals, hand embellished delights and trims sourced from all over the world and we will be doing our very own Made in Britain range! Interchangeable Sandals made right here in London.

We start of 2015 with a brand new Slinks website which we launched just before Christmas, literally! We absolutely love it and hope you do to!

One of our first pictures from a customer abroad has come in for 2015 and we couldn’t be more pleased!

Friday TreasurePods love story… Cyla was sent Auschwitz with her parents and siblings in 1943. She was the only member of her family who left the camp alive, and she owed her life entirely to a man named Jerzy Bielecki. Jerzy had been in the camp for three years when Cyla arrived. He was a Roman Catholic, imprisoned for helping the Polish resistance. She was a Jew.

Jerzy was working in a grain silo when he first saw a young woman repairing sacks and they were soon smitten. Jerzy made it his goal to get her out.

He spent eight months stitching together a guard’s uniform using scraps of material one of his friends was able to steal from a warehouse. He stole a pass and forged documents for taking a prisoner to work at a nearby farm. On July 21, 1944, he collected Cyla from her barracks, and they walked out of the gate. They didn’t stop for 10 days until they reached the home of one of Jerzy’s relatives. He rejoined the Polish resistance and found a hiding place for Cyla using his contacts. He went to fight, with no idea he wouldn’t see Cyla again for almost forty years.

Somehow, each came to believe the other had died. Cyla moved to Brooklyn and married, while Jerzy started a family in Poland. In 1983, Cyla told the story to her housekeeper, who found the words familiar, saying, “I saw a man telling the story on Polish television. He’s alive.”

Cyla was able to find his phone number and saw him a few weeks later. When she arrived at the airport in Krakow, Jerzy gave her 39 roses, one for each year since they’d last been together.

Best of Britannia – come and say hello!

What do you treasure?

What do you treasure?

I first started making Slinks with a factory in Elche, near Alicante in Spain. I was ‘nearly’ happy with the factory and speaking the language was a real help! I moved production to Delhi after Dragons Den and have used the same factory in Delhi since day one. I wanted to get the production costs down and I was also ready to place bigger orders. I had a choice of India or China. I may be wrong and feel free to correct me, but in my research and understanding there is a lot more artisan and craft approach to Indian factories, a more personal hand finished approach. It was recommended to me by the ex-shoe buyer of Bloomingdales and I am forever grateful to her. The quality and attention to detail has been brilliant. I work on every step of the process with them, a few words of Hindi, many a hand gesture and their much better than average grasp of English.

View from the factory window – sorry about the bad photography!

There are many stories of unpleasant factories in India and I am pleased to say where Slinks are made is not one of them. I go there regularly and each time get more involved and wish I could sit and bead with them! The vast majority of the work is done by men which I found very intriguing to start with. They do all the patterns, cutting, sewing and most interesting of all the hand beading. The two sides of the factory which are more female orientated are: office work and the packing end of it all.

Imtiaz and myself understanding each other (just!) over the beading and embroidery designs.

Choosing the leathers, colours, beads, buckles and designing is one side of the Slinks process I love but the other side is… the patterns! Getting an upper to fit, technically work perfectly and of course look fabulous dahlin’ is a challenge and a thrill.

choosing-leathers-for-slinksIf I know something can be done, I will stick at it, four, five, six patterns later it is done. The main pattern cutter is called Richie. He is brilliant! He doesn’t talk much and I babble away with (at) him. We get on very well, two more different people you probably couldn’t have but between us we do just fine.

Checking a pattern for fit and comfort. Richie in the middle in the navy tank top. Sumita in the white jacket, my right hand woman in India and the maker of all possible.

All we need to do now is wait for the new stock to arrive – not long now!

Thanks for reading,

Why I love Delhi…There is a slight chaotic organisation to everything in Delhi. I am sure you have heard of the crazy traffic, the cows in the road and the colours everywhere. My personal favourite story is as follows: I was picked up at the airport, it was the height of their summer, so baking hot. When the taxi driver and I had managed to locate each other, I was bundled into the back of a rather ‘florally’ decorated car. We set off and bounced merrily along the highway, all was gong well. All of a sudden the brakes were slammed on and we came to a standstill in the middle of the highway… I had no idea what the emergency was. I sat there and waited as the driver fumbled around in a box in front of the front passenger seat. “Wet towel?” he asked as he poked his head back up and held out a neatly rolled towel. Obviously he had forgotten a vital part of the welcome service (?!) and thought the highway was the best place to amend his fault! I accepted and we happily continued our trip together

I know, “shocking” as my Australian Aunt would say, not over a month since my last blog…

I have had emails through complaining that I didn’t give enough information about India, some calls to show the red turban photos amongst other things.

There is so much to tell about India, I’ll show pictures and do a section at a time. First start choosing fabric. This is for the Slinks bags, the ones you know and love and then also we have a new design… We are also introducing some very special Slinks bases and as usual quality, durability and comfort are vital.

This is the wall we are faced with…Image

This is our helpful helper Arish. Looks like I am inspired by his green top!Image

The super lovely Karishma was on hand, really efficient and a smiley. Very good at presenting rolls of fabric (pls see below). She helped with the language too!Image

Trying to narrow it down?Image

Not an easy task but one of the funnest! x

Well, another year… Happy 2013!

My intention is to write a blog at the beginning of each month but I realise we are fast approaching the end of January.

It was a busy Christmas for us, with lots of online sales and our launch of Barefoot Slinks in Heidi Klein. They will only be in stores for a short time before they return in the summer, so get shopping!

Available at: Liberty, 174 Westbourne Grove (Notting Hill), 257 Pavilion road (Sloane Square)

We have made a decision for 2013 to keep most of our Slinks sales online. We have over 30 countries waiting to stock Slinks and endless shops. This is all good and very flattering but what is important to us for the customer (among other things) is quality and fair pricing. I am still trying to get my head around how the majority of product sales work. From what I can gather one of the above has to give – either the quality is compromised or the customer is not getting value for money.

This is a rather radical step and we do have a few select boutiques we will be supplying and another few we would desperately love to supply too! We’ll keep you in the loop.

I recently did an interview for an Australian Company which of course I will post when it is published but thought I’d give any entrepreneurs out there a little teaser…

Q. If you were to define the entrepreneurial mindset, what does it mean and what are the benefits?

A. Belief, determination and a sense of humor. You have to believe in yourself and/or your product 100%. The belief in what you are doing and creating the end result is what will drive you to continue. Throughout the process I got a physical buzz every time I tried Slinks on – they worked and I loved it. There are no tricks to being an entrepreneur, you have to think in your way and trust your instincts. Get advice from people but do it your way whether this goes against the norm or not.

I start the day with the same breakfast EVERY day (except Saturdays when I meet the “girls” for breakfast…) I think I have been doing this for about 6 and a half months. This is a long time for me. I like versatility, change and innovation, hence my job with Slinks!

I have had quite a few people ask me about this magic breakfast so time to share it – try it once and you’ll never go back. It will keep you full for hours, loads of energy and you don’t need to have anything fancy like vanilla pods or Vietnamese corriander casually lying around your kitchen…

Next the recipe… there are three versions of this:

1. Magic Pancake

2. Fancy Version

3. Super Fancy Version

We’ll start with 1: Magic Pancake

Ingredients, all measurements below are rough, you can chuck in how much or little you want (except the egg, they come in one’s):

1 egg

1 tablespoon of creme fraiche

3 and a half table spoons of porridge oats (more of less)

Put the egg and creme fraiche in a bowl, mix together. Add the porridge oats, mix together. Put a little butter in a small pan – cook on one side till golden brown, repeat on the other side. Serve on a plate and drizzle (good cooking word) maple syrup all over it. You don’t have to do this (but much nicer if you do) and you can use runny honey if you want et …voila!

2. Fancy Version

Same as above but put a handful of raspberries on top before you put the maple syrup on – you can use any berries really. See picture.

3. Super Fancy Version

Same as above but just before you put it in the pan throw a small handful of blueberries into the mix, stir them in and then pop in the pan.
That’s it – try it and enjoy it!

I always love writing these blogs but never seem to have the time to do them. They are always at the bottom of the list to do (not being so savvy with the social media “how it can change your business” school of thought!). Before I know it, it’s September – I have to get something up on the blog!

This September we have a new upper in our summer footwear team – The September Sparkle

A shimmer delight for that September Smile

Available in Black and Truffle for one month only! A simple leather strap with a diamante design.

We often get asked if the Barefoot Slinks can be worn on the Slinks bases. Unfortunately not, well, not yet! We are working on it.

This time of year is usually my favourite. The sun is shining, people are out on their bikes and there is much feet action and frivolity! This year, no such thing here in London. No sun = fewer people in Slinks – so we just love the sun! I grew up in lovely, hot Madrid and remember endless summers of running around barefoot, jumping in and out of the pool, delicious barb-b-q (eaten with your fingers of course) and fun and freedom all the time.

Don’t get me wrong, I love London, but most of all, it is the people. The buildings, things to do and the weather I must say, after 10 years is a little draining but… the people?! My walk to work should technically take me 2 minutes, it usually tales me about 5 times that time, we’re still only talking about just over 10 minutes.

I’ll mention the first of my encounters on route… the lovely Mina. Mina works in the launderette, she doesn’t speak a lot of English but we have great chats – she also double’s up as the best eyebrow threader in London (this is meant to be a closely guarded secret but if you live in North London drop me an email to and I’ll let you in on it). You’re smuggled into the back room where you perch yourself on a pile of washing, it’s soft and comfy, and the threading begins…

There is a host of people to meet and great and nationalities to get to know. I have also managed to furnish a great deal of my studio from my walk to work.

The table – Thank you to Aziz for my table from The Triangle restaurant.

The gorgeous Moroccan wooden table from The Triangle restaurant, a duck egg blue dresser a simple ‘not loved any more by previous owner’ item, a leather sofa and an array of crisp boxes (from Londis) beautifully covered by my mother to create a wall of pattern and colour.

I am going to sound a little like a Susie homemaker from a DIY series but… A few crisp boxes, free wallpaper samples (homebase, B&Q etc.) and a very patient and talented mother is all you need!

The Sofa – A little bit of tlc was needed but not much.

Small business always have to think of money and what is the priority to spend it on. For me, the two most important things to date were the website and good quality stock. Though creating a happy and beautiful work space is also vital. A place where clients can come, where you can work successfully, where you can have business meetings and spend endless weekends is a must and unfortunately for now, has to be done on a small budget.

We think we’ve done rather well! Let us know what you think.

I have been confused for the last couple of months about what the Sinks blog should be about. I keep on getting told to write something at least every two weeks, at the same time keep on top of twitter, facebook, pinterest etc. Where do I find time to actually work on making, designing, shipping, beading, meetings, dealing with real customers etc. for Slinks?! I’d imagined the blog would be about shoes/shopping/fashion and letting you all know what the upper of the month was going to be. I want it to be a behind the scenes, an honest account of a day in the life of Slinks. I have been doing Slinks full time now for nearly three years and it’s hard. Running your own company you feel very alone but if you take a day off or have a bad day nothing gets done, I mean nothing. (I’ll fill you in on being stranded on an island “due to rough seas” next time…) There is no one to fall back on. You have to be the coffee girl, the managing director, the designer, the post office girl, all wrapped into one with a huge smile on your face. Don’t get me wrong, I do love it and wouldn’t change it but every now and then it hits you.

A friend of mine who also runs her own company, a lovely lass and has the same ups and downs as I do, recently broke up with her boyfriend of two years. He was a lovely lad, having declined a kiss from Steve Jones and a invite to the ball by Prince Edward I’ve met a few!

It’s hard breaking up and no amount of feng shushi (Feng Shui, sushi sounds much more fun), crystal balls, horoscope reading and rain dances will bring him back for her. I went through a bad break up once myself and if Zoe Ball was the Queen of Everything (Stylist) she would put love and heartbreak on the curriculum “Everyone needs to fall in love but once you’ve been through heartbreak you can cope with the rest of your life”. But, on a positive note I have solutions. Solutions that make the time passing a better time and once the time passes a bit she will feel better. I’ve written this for her but it applies to all…

Rule one: Keep active, I mean physically active. Run, get outside in the air, those endorphins once released really do make you feel better. Tire yourself out so you sleep.

Rule Two: Do things. I remember a few years ago I left Madrid to come back to London. My adorable little nieces were there from Australia and we had a long, tearful, emotional goodbye. I got to the airport and my flight was cancelled, I had another night in Madrid. I came back to the house expecting a joyous welcome. “We were having a nice time without you” I was greeted with. Good for you girls. Pick yourself up and get one with having fun. Sitting around being miserable won’t bring them back and if they do come back at least you’ve had fun in the meantime!

Rule three: Cry. Cry whenever you want to, with whoever you want. We are human and supposed to cry. Do make sure you drink lots of water to replace your tears.

Rule four: Text or call him if you want to (within reason!). Don’t harass the poor fella but after a few years with someone, cutting off completely is heartbreaking. On top of the break up you don’t want to feel like they have died. They loved you for a reason and you will always be special to them as they will to you. You might move on but there is no point in loosing a friend on top of a partner.

Rule five: Don’t learn by your mistakes. Be you again and again. Never change or wish you hadn’t done that, or said that. You should be loved for you with all your imperfections. If that one wasn’t right, the next one will be and if he’s not then the one after that, or after that…

Dance through the tears girls (and boys)

Just a short one… We are happy to have received a shipment of Slinks into snowy London. We might not be wearing them tomorrow but we will get them uploaded onto the website as soon as possible.
